Saratoga Springs was originally produced as 90 (4) minute daily episodes for National Public Radio. So many of these episodes, dealing with the lives and loves of a whole cast of wacky characters in this charming town of Saratoga Springs, are brilliant little gems. But we found that not many people will spend 6 1/2 hours listening to a series about a town they couldn’t care less about, so it was edited down to 2 1/2 hours. What a shame, because some of the finest and funniest things we’ve ever done are buried in here. So, we decided to take the very best episodes, add the author as a character to tie things together, and tell this story in a different way.

I once knew a fellow who had an interesting tradition: Every year, on the first day of Summer, he would read THE GREAT GATSBY from cover to cover. I admired not only his dedication to tradition, but his choice of material.

It was not long after that I developed my own tradition: On the first day of spring, I would pull out the complete SARATOGA SPRINGS and listen to it from beginning to end as I went through my day.

With that in mind, the compilation entitled THE BEST OF SARATOGA SPRINGS is fine, for what it is, but for us die-hard fans of the original, complete series, it falls short. What are considered BEST by some are not BEST for others.

I would encourage ZBS to bring back the collection in it’s entirety, because, quite frankly, spring is almost here and my tapes are wearing out.
