About This

By Ishmael Reed

Jazz, voodoo, the Cotton Club, flappers, gangsters and bootleggers intermingle in this lively adaptation of Ishmael Reed’s novel, “Mumbo Jumbo.” Dave Adams (Mojo) plays the voodoo detective, Papa LaBas. We captured the sounds of the era, riding in the back seat of old cars with Fritz, recording in the streets of Philadelphia late at night, using a cast of over thirty actors.

Awesome with headphones. 2.5 hours

I was one of the actors in Mumbo JUmbo, playing the role of Thor WIntergreen and a museum guard. I had a delightful time recording this piece, and yes, we actually DID record it in the streets, abandoned buildings and some historic places in Philadelphia. When I first heard this when it was first released on the cassettes, I was totally blown away. Now i’m looking forward to hearing it once again, iin the digital format in which we recorded it. It was beautifully written and (not intending to brag since my role was relatively small), wonderfully performed. Kudos to ZBS for releasing it on CD!
